What is SharePoint?

SharePoint is a business collaboration software platform developed by Microsoft. The most recent versions of SharePoint includes Windows SharePoint Foundation (WSF), Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2010 Standard Edition, and MOSS 2010 Enterprise Edition. Microsoft have a very flexible license policy for SharePoint. To deploy WSF, organizations only need to have a license windows server 2008, while to deploy MOSS organization will need to have additional MOSS server and client access licenses.

WSF can be used to easily implement basic intranet web portal for a department or an entire company. WSF provides basic features of business collaboration, documents management, and search, while advanced features such as Enterprise Content Management, Enterprise Search are available from the MOSS version.
